Philomusica Concert Choir
December 2012 Concerts
Open the Holiday season with Philomusica Concert Choir’s concerts on Saturday, December
1 at 8 pm, and Sunday, December 2 at 3 pm. This program will have full orchestra and four
professional soloists. Back by audience demand, “Messiah” leads off the program.
“Messiah” Part One, the Christmas Portion - George Frederic Handel
“Organ Concerto, Opus 4, No. 2, in B Flat Major” – George Frederic Handel
Organist – Shea Velloso
Handel’s organ concertos were typically played between parts of his oratorios. Handel himself often played them.
“Christmas Day – a choral fantasy on old carols” – Gustav Holst
A number of well-known carols are interwoven in this “fantasy”, including “The First Noel”, “Good Christian Men Rejoice”, and “God Rest You Merry Gentlemen”.
“Carol Symphony” – James Bassi
The first movement is a fantasia on a popular Ukrainian carol melody, “The Carol of the Bells”. The second movement is a setting of the Irish “Wexford Carol”. The third movement is a rhythmic theme and variations on “Tomorrow Shall be My Dancing Day”.
FINALE – the ‘Hallelujah Chorus’ from “Messiah”, with audience participation on stage
